WoodenBoat Magazine
Thanks to the generosity of the Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Fellowship, I was fortunate enough to spend my post-graduate year learning about traditional boat building at the Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter in Norheimsund, Norway. In an environment that often feels like a scene from Game of Thrones (there is a smithy, ropewalk, and old ships looming from the fjord) the small boat shop is especially unique because the scale of the final product allows for ownership and attention to detail unlike anything possible in a larger ship or a building. Through drawing, hands-on building, and observation, my hope was to develop a deeper appreciation for craft in the built environments around us.
