Kate grew up in Houston, Texas, making up stories and illustrating them whenever she could. She studied architecture at Yale and Norwegian boat building through the Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Fellowship, after which she made her way out to Los Angeles to begin a career in animation. She worked as a visual development artist at Dreamworks TV for projects including Croods: Family Tree, Abominable and the Invisible City, and Madagascar: A Little Wild. She is currently working as a location designer for the upcoming Big City Greens Movie at Disney TV.

Kate is the co-author and illustrator of the middle grade series Maple's Theory of Fun, forthcoming from Aladdin books, an imprint of Simon and Schuster. She is also the author/illustrator of the nonfiction picture book Sustainable Structures from Holiday House Inc.

In her free time, she enjoys building furniture, biking around LA, and drawing wobbly buildings that look like they might fall down. She is repped by Azantian Literary.
